Blogging in China: Wei Wenhua (RIP)

Friends,

Here’s yet another reason it is a great idea to be an American: Blogging is tolerated. Contrast this with bloggin in China where, apparently, it can get you killed. CNN.com reports that a Chinese blogger was killed, beaten to death, by 50 people, for blogging the wrong things.

On Monday Wei happened on a confrontation in the central Chinese province of Hubei between city inspectors and villagers protesting over the dumping of waste near their homes.

A scuffle developed when residents tried to prevent trucks from unloading the rubbish, Xinhua said.

When Wei took out his cell phone to record the protest, more than 50 municipal inspectors turned on him, attacking him for five minutes, Xinhua said. Wei was dead on arrival at a Tianmen hospital, the report said.

Qi Zhengjun, chief of the urban administration bureau in the city of Tianmen, lost his job over the incident, Xinhua reported Friday.

The beating was condemned online. “It’s no longer news that urban administrators enforce the law with violence,” said an editorial on the news Web site Northeast News, according to The Associated Press.

Thank God for Freedom of speech! America may have a lot of flaws, but at least we can speak freely–even if no one listens. Perhaps freedom will someday be a reality in China.

I recently heard about this story, and I lived in China this summer. We videotaped our lives for a website and we were stopped multiple times for taping. However, the government officials allowed us to film because we are harmless!

we got all the tapes back and all the video is online at [link removed–jerry]

the Chinese people are not brutal like these incidents, they are so kind and genuine. It is the hope of our trip that we can spread the word of the kindness of the Chinese people. It is our goal to help bring the two countries together.

  2. Friend,

I do not permit many links to appear on my blog unless I post them. I’m not sure what the angle is so I removed it. I don’t think my blog post has anything to do with the Chinese people in general as much as it has to do with the 50 people who beat Wei Wenhua to death. I’m not making blanket statements about China necessarily, but about the joys of freedom in America as contrasted with this one particular incident. Thanks for stopping by.
