Troy Palamualu has sounded off against the NFL and it’s about time someone did. Said, the Steelers safety:
“I think regarding the evolution of football, it’s becoming more and more flag football, two-hand touch,” Polamalu said. “We’ve really lost the essence of what real American football is about. I think it’s probably all about money. They’re not really concerned about safety.”
I whole-heartedly agree. The penalties that are being called nowadays are pathetic–and, to be sure, arbitrary. I’m not blaming the refs completely. I’m just saying that it seems that some guys are meant to play football and some are not. Those who aren’t, like me, should stay home and watch and not get on the field on Sundays.
Problem is, too many suits are running the NFL and the NFL is still a product to be sold. They think that the fans want some watered down, European soccer match or something. No we want dudes hitting each other hard. We want dudes running full blast down the field on kick-offs and hitting other dudes.
The ESPN article continued:
Polamalu said that football’s essence is being taken away with the NFL’s heavy-handed penalties, saying football “just loses so much of its essence when it becomes like a pansy game.”
Polamalu said that past NFL greats wouldn’t be able to play the way that made them great in today’s game.
“When you see guys like Dick Butkus, the Ronnie Lotts, the Jack Tatums, these guys really went after people,” Polamalu told reporters. “Now, they couldn’t survive in this type of game. They wouldn’t have enough money. They’d be paying fines all the time and they’d be suspended for a year after they do it two games in a row. It’s kind of ridiculous.”
Don’t forget cats like Jack Lambert and Mean Joe Green. Hell, Mean Joe probably would have to be in counseling nowadays just for his name! There are safety things we must be concerned about yes, but not at the expense of what football is: Hardcore, rough, organized violence. It is meant to be hardhitting and angry.
That’s enough of a rant for now. All I meant to say was that I agree with Mr Polamalu. Let the guys play ball–American Football.
